Pat Arculus Comes to Visit

The new Cabinet Member for Education, Pat Arculus, came to visit the school on Thursday 1st May. Pat was very impressed with the school and its facilities and expressed her support for small rural schools. Many positive things were said by Pat in the meeting, making us all feel very positive.

We understand that the decision, to be made by Pat, will now take place towards the end of May. As soon as we hear anything we will let you know, but if you have any questions in the meantime, please feel free to get in touch.

Possibility of Year 6 in 2009!

Jenny and Paul attended a meeting at Midhurst Intermediate last night with other Rother Valley Heads and Chairs and Colin James. The meeting was to provide us with an update on the consultation process (not much news apart from the volume of responses which is keeping WSCC very busy!) and to consult on the possibility of adding a year 6 to the primary schools in September 2009 instead of 2010.

There was overwhelming support for this, and the decision will be made very soon, but it looks very positive. We have already started planning towards this and will have more news soon.

Radio Silence (for now!)

The consultation period ended today. It was 6 weeks ago exactly that we heard of the proposals for the school, and I must say our mindset now is a lot more positive than it was then.

In 6 weeks we have put in to place a massive logistics operation. Looking back at what we have done makes us all very proud. Even Colin James said how impressed he was by the amount of effort we have put in and what we have achieved in those 6 weeks. Whether it be posters, banners, letter writing, petition taking, research, document writing, running public meetings, lobbying politicians or making soup & sandwiches - we have all done our bit!

We are going sign off for now and try to restore normality to our family and work lives. The campaign team have shown a huge amount of commitment and dedication which lasted through to the end.

Additionally the support from the parents, teachers and community has been immense. The school continues to run 'business as usual' and morale is high and the children are happy.

Our response was submitted to Colin at County Hall yesterday at 4:30pm. We included copies of all the letters you have written, copies of the petitions and much more supporting documentation.

There is not much more we can do now apart from wait. We will hear the outcome early/mid May and all we can do now is hope for the best outcome. Please join us in doing this through your preferred means, whether it be praying, crossing fingers or some other means.

Again, thank you all for your continued support and come back and see us again in May, where we hope to have some news for you.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please email us at rogateschool@gmail.com.

Going Radio Silent for now.

The Numbers Game

5th April 2008

We are nearly there!

Okay. So, we have all realised this is now a numbers game. Well, here are some more numbers for you. Whilst 'digesting' this, please remember that Rogate is a village of 500 houses with a school of 41 children:

- 1310 people signed our petition that was placed in various local outlets.

- Our website has had over 15,000 hits from 14 different countries.

- Nearly 300 people signed the online petition at No 10 Downing St.

- We have received 127 individual letters of support from places as far afield as Spain and North America.

- Our response document has: 91 pages, 26,669 words and we estimated would have cost WSCC upwards of £100,000 to produce if they had commissioned it.

- We estimate that over 100 man days of effort has been put in to the production of our counter-proposal, probably a couple more than WSCC put in to their 'proposal'.

- The 'Guinness world record' for 'the number of people who have stayed up to 4:30am writing a counter-proposal against the closure of a primary school' has been smashed by: Stewart Wilson, Fi Dix, Sasha & Tom Boam, Andy & Sharon Coleman' - well done guys!

44 Hours to go.

- The counter-proposal is now complete.

- We have, what some have described as a magnificent response.

- 23 people have worked on producing it, including 2 PHDs

- The document presents what we think is a solid case for keeping Rogate School open

- One of the most interesting facts is the projected birth rates in the area:

Birth Rates

Ouch! I think we need some schools!

A Thought from one of the campaign team

4th April 2008

Mark Dunn comes to visit

I received this really great email tonight from one of the campaign team that really sums up the past 6 weeks:

"It really is quite amazing, when you think about it, how far it has all come. Did you ever think, that hideous day back in Feb, that you would be speaking at Public Meetings, lobbying the Council, being interviewed by the media, thrusting yourself at little old ladies, spending the night with people you had barely said two words to before, organising an army of volunteers, counting babies, being filmed, recorded, etc. It might have been awful at times, soul destroying, tiring to the point of dropping, lonely, nerve wracking - but - Hey, what a journey!"

By the way, I didn't conciously 'thrust' myself at old ladies. It was the way I sat in my chair at one of the public meetings!

A big Thank You from all at Rogate School goes out to Mark. We really appreciate you coming to see us today and see for yourself what a great asset to WSCC Rogate School is.

We hope you enjoyed your visit, the children certainly did, especially the young Class 1 gentleman who greeted you!

We tried to show Mark the school as it is, with no ceremony (we didn't tell anyone he was coming).

The Governors Endorse the view of the Community

31st March 2008

The Board of the Diocese pay a visit

At a full governing body meeting tonight the governors of Rogate School voted unanimously in favour of the option to amalgamate with South Harting School. This is obviously the preference of the governors of Rogate School and although the headteacher and governors of South Harting are aware of our preference, they have not yet made any decision themselves.

We see this as a model that offers benefits to all concerned and ensures a sustainable schooling environment is provided for all communities in the area.

We will issue the full response to the consultation later this week as soon as it has passed through the quality and accuracy reviews we have planned.

We were pleased to welcome the board of the diocese to the school tonight. The purpose of the visit was to come and take a look around the school and view a presentation from the governors. They then fielded and asked questions from the governors and in all it was a very informative meeting for all concerned.

The attendees were:

  • Derek Bastide - Chair of the Board
  • Robert Harris - Chair of the School Provision Committee
  • Roger Combes - Archdeacon of Horsham
  • Nick Symes - Board Member
  • Philip Jones - Archdeacon of Lewes
  • Alyson Heath - Board Member

They will use the input from tonight's meeting to help formulate their response to the consultation exercise.

First Draft of Response Document is Ready

28th March 2008

Mark Dunn is enthusiastic about our proposals

Those on the core campaign team and members of the Governing Body received the first draft of the response document today. We have prepared the document in advance of Monday's governors meeting and at the moment we believe it is almost complete.

The key factor is that the document puts forward a strong case for keeping the school open, with the preferred configuration of an amalgamation with South Harting.

The document will be made available to the general public once the governing body have agreed on the preferred (or other) option.

Jenny Chapman, Sasha Boam and Paul Hardwick met with Mark Dunn and Colin James at County Hall today. We all felt it was a really positive meeting and Mark seemed very enthused by some of the arguments we were putting forward. Particular interest was expressed in the locating of a pre-school nursery on the school site and the options we are considering for the future of the school.

A really positive meeting all round and he has asked to meet once more before the 8th April closing date.

27th March 2008

Our 2nd Public Meeting!

26th March 2008

Meetings, Meetings and More Meetings

Over 85 people turned out for our 2nd main public consultation meeting tonight. We presented the 3 options for the future of the school and the attendees cast their vote at the end of the meeting. The outcome was:

  1. Go it alone with a Year 6 - 13 Votes
  2. Amalgamate with Rake - 1 Vote
  3. Amalgamate with South Harting - 70 Vote

So, in summary, Rogate village prefer an amalgamation with South Harting over any other options (We did ask if there were other options that we had missed).

This will now be presented to the Governing Body on Monday 31/3 for approval and onward submission (if successful) to WSCC as our preferred option.

The presentation is available here.

We met with Colin James tonight.

Good meeting and it appears as though we are heading in the right general direction with developing our response to the consultation.

We will be meeting Mark Dunn on Friday 28th and the diocese board on Monday 31st!

As soon as we hear anything we will let you know!

Over 200 local residents, children, teachers and governors turned up for Rogate's public consultation meeting. Robert Back (WSCC), Colin James (WSCC) and Elizabeth Yates (Diocese) were present to present the case for closing Rogate. Some excellent questions were fielded from the audience, with the feeling at the end of the meeting that many questions remain unanswered.

Campaign Team Kick Off

28th February

Parent's Meeting

Over 20 parents met at the school this evening to kick of the core campaign. A list of over 80 action items was agreed and assigned to individuals and the feeling at the end of the meeting was extremely positive.

Many ideas were capture on what we need to do to put forward a strong case for keeping Rogate School open.

The team will meet on a weekly basis and will report back at a series of public meetings to be held every Thursday, starting on 13th March at 7:30pm at the school.

We had over 80% of parents attend the briefing run by the Head Teacher and representatives of the Governing Body. The mood of the meeting was very positive and the feeling was that we are going to give this our best shot.

A smaller team of people volunteered to become our core campaign team.
